1994 Turbo S Flatnose "Flachbau" #480463

As Porsche wound down production of its 964 Turbo in late 1993, a final batch of uncommitted chassis were sent to Porsche Exclusive for conversion to ‘S’ specification. Fitted with the ‘Works Increased Horsepower’ X88 engine option rated at 385HP and hand formed front and rear quarter panels, replete with pop up headlights, these chassis became one of the most rare and most coveted 911 models Porsche has produced for the US market to date. It is the final air cooled single Turbo model to be built.

Porsche issued only 66 examples worldwide with the ‘Flatnose’ or ‘Flachbau’ option reminiscent of the Porsche 935 and prescient to the forth coming 993. Of these 39 units were North American models designated by the factory as ‘1994 Turbo S Model X85’. The rarity of the model, and the fact that it is the very last of the single turbo Porsche’s, makes the X85 a very special investment grade supercar.

The ‘Flachbau’ option, included the X88 ‘Turbo S’ engine, hand formed front quarter panels, hand formed rear quarter panels, pop up headlights, 3.8 RS front splitters, a special Turbo S whale tail and polished ‘Speedline for Porsche’ 18” wheels. The X85 option added $60,179 to the Turbo’s $99,000 base price.

This specific example is the vehicle that started the 964 Turbo S, and following that the 1990’s air cooled turbo’s, collectors renaissance starting in 2014. Through the research, writings and websites of Mark Smith, who is the current owner, many Porsche specialists and collectors, have come to know 480463 as the most highly optioned production Porsche built during the 964 era. An assumptive fact which has never been disproven. No other 964 model example worldwide is known to be more highly optioned.

As only the second owner of chassis 480463, Smith purchased the car in 2000 from the original owner who had purposely specified it to be the highest optioned 1994 production Porsche built worldwide, with an MSRP that was unheard for Porsche up to that time, $188,706. While only a photocopy of the original window sticker remains, it documents many of the 84 individual option codes fitted to this example. Including a $9,424 special option to air freight the car from the Porsche factory to its North American dealer destination, Silver Star Motors in Long Island, NY.

This is the only 1994 Turbo S in the world delivered from the factory with Black Metallic paint and full Matador Red leather interior. The currently fitted factory carbon fiber and black carpet (the original dark rootwood components and a complete factory cut Matador Red carpet set come with the car) compliment the very rare Matador Red full leather interior with Black leather piping.

As optioned, almost 100% of the interior components left the factory covered in Matador Red leather. And it is among a very limited number of cars coming from the ‘Exclusive’ department fitted with the factory cell phone center console and Tech Art speaker enclosures front and rear.

Uniquely, this car also came from the factory with its Speedline wheel centers painted to match in Black Metallic. Adding to its value, the wheels are currently off the car fitted with one of the only known sets of 18” Yokohama A-008P tires remaining in existence, other than as might be found on another, originally fitted 1994 Turbo S. These tires were only ever fitted by Porsche to the 1994 Turbo and Turbo S.

All parts on the car, exempting current wheels, are original Porsche. And all, as delivered by the factory, parts which have been changed out accompany the car along with an extensive number of very rare, and unobtainable, factory spares. Uninstalled parts include the original, and very rare, Panasonic cell phone and the original radio/CD with trunk fitted six disc CD changer.

It is supplied with its factory tool roll, spare tire, and road-side work gloves. Additionally, it is accompanied by its Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of its original window sticker, 911 Turbo 3.6 manual and books in their original portfolio and the factory radio card.

With only ~1,500 miles per year (42,921 miles) on the odometer, 480463 is in top condition. While no longer 100% original paint, the paint is amazing and in superb condition, accompanied by a clean Carfax/Autocheck report. The undercarriage is in stunningly remarkable condition for its age and mileage.

An absolutely amazing car to drive, with the kick in the pants only the final edition of Porsche’s air cooled, single turbo, engine can deliver. No Porsche collection, particularly of factory Turbo models, can be complete without the essential X85 in the portfolio. 480463 is indeed the rarest of the X85 examples.
